Surgery

Surgery is the best and only curative treatment option in patients diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. The patient has to be evaluated for resectability prior to the surgery with the aid of modern imaging techniques. Surgical assessment still remains the final evaluation parameter for resection in a potentially resectable pancreatic cancer ⁵. The location, size and spread of the tumor are factors that determine the surgical technique. Major operations for resection of pancreas are:

• Pancreaticoduodenectomy
• Distal or caudal pancreatectomy
• Total Pancreatectomy
• Approaches to improve long term survival
